How do you choose an engagement ring? A guide for men
Make choosing an engagement ring easier on yourself, and read this, the most detailed guide for men.
Choosing the perfect engagement ring is not only an important step in your life; it is an act that stands for love, commitment and the beginning of a new chapter shared with someone. Every man preparing to ask that fateful question knows an engagement ring carries powerful emotional and symbolic weight.
It is not simply a matter of choosing jewelry — it is a sign of commitment and love that she will carry with her every day. In this guide we will take you through the key steps and the advice on choosing a ring that reflects your love and dedication exactly, a ring that will stand for your shared path for good.
What should you consider when choosing the perfect engagement ring?
Choosing the perfect engagement ring for the person you love calls for thought about several key factors. These are not merely aesthetic choices; they reflect how well you know and understand your partner's tastes and wishes.
The style of the ring
Think about the style of ring that would best suit your partner's personality. Is she someone who prefers a classic, timeless look, or is she drawn to modern, singular designs?
Look at the jewelry she currently wears. If she prefers minimal pieces, a ring of simple design may be ideal. For someone with a striking presence, a ring with a remarkable design or an eye-catching stone may be the better choice.
The material of the ring
Gold (yellow, white or red) and platinum are popular choices. Each material has its own qualities and symbolism. Gold, for example, is often taken as a symbol of richness and warmth, while platinum offers durability and a modern look. Consider too whether your partner wears more white or more yellow jewelry, so as to match the metal of the ring to what she already owns. There is more on material and design below and on the blog.
The size of the ring
The exact size is genuinely hard to establish without measuring her finger. One way to find out is to subtly borrow one of the rings she wears on the same finger she will wear the engagement ring on, and measure its inner diameter.
We can send a single-use ring sizer to your home address so you can measure her finger, but if the ring is a surprise this is hard to do without her noticing. If she does not usually wear rings, our advice is to have us make the ring in a standard size; if it does not fit, we will afterwards make a completely new one to measure, free of charge.
Every ring from ZRIN is our own production, which means we make all our rings to measure in every size, so every model is always available.
If we do not have the model you are looking for in stock at our salon, it takes 7 to 10 days to make.
If the engagement ring size you bought does not fit, we make a completely new ring to measure, free of charge. So you can be sure you have received a new ring, you keep the one you bought until the new one is finished.
There is no deadline for a size exchange.
It is worth knowing that at ZRIN we never enlarge or reduce an engagement ring, which is to say we do not cut it, because doing so compromises the quality of the ring itself.
Personal taste
Think about her own style and preferences. Is she someone who values tradition, or does she prefer something singular and modern? Pay attention to the comments she makes about jewelry or about fashion generally. They can be a useful indication of what she is drawn to.
Materials and design options
In choosing an engagement ring, the material and the design play a key role. Each material carries its own symbolism, and the design reflects your partner's personality and style. Here are a few popular options:
A gold engagement ring
Whether you want a yellow, white or red ring, the choice is between 14-carat and 18-carat gold. As with white gold, we recommend 14-carat, because it is harder and so scratches and wears less.
- Yellow gold: the traditional choice, standing for classic beauty and durability. Ideal for anyone who values lasting quality and a traditional look.
- White gold: a modern alternative to classic yellow gold, popular for its bright, contemporary look. It suits people who prefer a more modern style.
- Red gold: a singular and romantic choice, rose gold is ideal for anyone who wants something a little different and more expressive.
A platinum engagement ring
Platinum is remarkably durable, tough, white and pure, because platinum jewelry contains 95% pure platinum. That is simply striking, because with gold, for instance, it is practically impossible to make a ring from 95% pure gold — gold on its own is not hard enough. On top of that, platinum is hypoallergenic, which alongside everything else gives it a considerable advantage. A ring of 95% pure platinum will last for good, and it is precisely for that reason that we like to say it is a material that cannot be compared with others. Platinum is a rare and lasting material, known for its durability and its elegant white shine. It is perfect for anyone looking for longevity and sophistication.
Which material is worth more?
Platinum is the most valuable material, because platinum jewelry contains 95% pure platinum. On top of that it is a material rarer than gold, which gives it further value. After platinum in value comes 18-carat gold, because it holds a higher proportion of gold in the alloy than 14-carat does.
Since the proportion of platinum in the alloy is 95%, a platinum ring will be the heaviest, just as an 18-carat ring will be heavier than a 14-carat one. The same ring, for example, will weigh 2.80 g in 14-carat gold, 3.40 g in 18-carat gold and 4.60 g in platinum.
Ring prices follow accordingly, from the highest for platinum to the lowest for 14-carat gold.
Is there a difference in color between 14kt gold, 18kt gold and platinum?
Where white rings are concerned, a platinum ring will be the whitest, because platinum's natural color is snow-white and it will never change.
Between 18- and 14-carat white gold rings you will see no difference at first, because white gold rings are plated with a layer of rhodium. Once that layer comes away, that is once it wears off with use, an 18-carat gold ring will take on a faintly yellowish tint.
A 14-carat gold ring will not yellow, because we use the whitest alloys on the market.
With a yellow gold ring, 18-carat gold will be a more intense yellow, precisely because of the higher proportion of gold in the alloy.
Choosing the gemstone
In choosing an engagement ring, the kind of gemstone used can carry particular meaning. At ZRIN we offer a range of options, including classic diamonds, Swarovski zircons, moissanite and lab-created diamonds.
Swarovski zircon
Swarovski zircons are known for their exceptional shine and precise cutting. Although they are not a natural gemstone, they offer a brilliance close to a diamond's at a more accessible price. Swarovski zircon is the choice for anyone looking for luxury and elegance without the high cost.
Diamond engagement rings
The diamond is the traditional choice for engagement rings, standing for enduring love and impermeability. The stone represents strength, durability and indestructible beauty, which makes it an ideal symbol of lasting commitment.
Moissanite
Moissanite is an increasingly popular choice for its powerful brilliance and its resistance. It is often chosen as a more environmentally and ethically acceptable alternative to traditional diamonds, offering a similar look and feel at a lower price.
Lab-grown diamond
Lab-created diamonds are real diamonds, created in the controlled environment of a laboratory. They offer the same beauty and quality as mined diamonds but are often more accessible, and are considered the more ethical option.
The design of the ring
Classic design
Simple lines and a traditional look are ideal for anyone who values timeless elegance. Solitaire rings with a single stone are a common choice in this category.
Modern design
For anyone who prefers a contemporary look in keeping with current trends, modern ring designs with unusual shapes and inventive settings are an excellent choice.

Understanding the symbolism of engagement rings
An engagement ring is more than an ordinary piece of jewelry; it is deeply rooted in tradition and symbolism. Through history the ring has stood for enduring love and commitment, and its shape — the circle — symbolises infinity and continuity. In many cultures the circle is considered the perfect form, representing an unbroken flow of love and togetherness that knows neither beginning nor end.
The symbolism of engagement rings through history
The symbolism of the engagement ring dates back to ancient Egypt, where rings were made from braided reeds or leather. The circular shape was taken to represent eternity, while the emptiness at its centre symbolised a gate or door through which the couple entered a new phase of life. The Romans continued the tradition, but the ring became a symbol of ownership: a man gave a ring to a woman to show that she was now under his protection.
Over time the symbolism of the engagement ring evolved and became a universal symbol of love and commitment. In the Middle Ages engagement rings were popular among the nobility, often set with gemstones that carried further meanings. The diamond, the hardest natural material, symbolised impermeability and eternity.
In many cultures the engagement ring is worn on the fourth finger of the left hand, from the belief that a vein in that finger (the vena amoris) leads directly to the heart. Although this has not proved medically accurate, the romantic idea of a ring connected to the heart has survived through the centuries.
Today engagement rings come in a range of styles and materials, but their essential symbolism remains the same: commitment, love and a life shared.
In the end, your choice of engagement ring is the beginning of a new and beautiful chapter in your life. At ZRIN we are here to help you make that step a perfect one. We invite you to visit our collection and experience the beauty and the quality of our rings.

Perfect gift
One of the best-known sayings in the world holds that as long as there is love, there will be a world for us to live in, the world we know. We are made with a great deal of love; we come into the world while our parents await us with impatience and a love beyond describing; we give our children and the people we love a love we could never have imagined existed; we give gifts to those we love, value and respect on the most important days of their lives; and in the end we decide to spend a life and share our love with the one person we love.
