Since we were the first in Croatia to produce jewelry in platinum, let us introduce you to a material whose qualities make it fair to think of as a touch of eternity.
What is platinum?
Platinum is a noble metal, greyish-white in its elemental state, lustrous and tough, and workable when heated. It is exceptionally resistant to scratching and wear and to loss of color, which makes it well suited to the finest jewelry. Beyond that it resists many chemical influences, has excellent thermal characteristics and stable electrical properties, which is why it is also used in industry.
How long has platinum been used in jewelry?
Ancient peoples left us little record of using platinum, but from archaeological finds we can conclude that they knew of it. The oldest known object made of platinum dates from the 7th century BC: an Egyptian jewelry box, kept today in the Louvre.
Beyond that, it is known that the ancient peoples of South America used platinum to make jewelry and body ornaments.
What should I know about jewelry made from platinum?
As with gold jewelry, platinum is alloyed with other metals, because on its own it is not firm enough for making jewelry. Platinum jewelry made at ZRIN contains 95.5% pure platinum, which — by way of comparison — is nowhere near possible with gold, as it is not firm enough.
Because it is so tough, platinum is exceptionally well suited to setting gemstones. It is also a material that resists oxidation, so soldering platinum parts together needs no agents to protect against it.
On top of all that, platinum can claim hypoallergenic properties, so even someone allergic to gold will have no trouble with platinum against the skin.
Platinum jewelry is precious because the material itself is exceptionally rare, and also because making jewelry from platinum calls for particular knowledge and skill.
